BRIDGE CONTEST
 

An event to test your bridge design skills

You are invited to show your skills in a bridge design and building contest.
The goal is to bring student, professors and staff from all Swiss universities together in a technical and artistical challenge. Contestants are invited to use their knowledge and creativity to desin a cardboard bridge resisting the highest load possible compared to the self weight of the structure. Prizes will be given to the most resistant structure and most aestetic design.

Three prizes will be given to the most resisting bridges according to the ratio between the supported load and the self weight of the structure.
                1st  prize strength : 600 CHF
                2nd prize strength : 400 CHF
                3rd  prize strength : 250 CHF

Three prizes will be given by a jury to the most aesthetic structure but resisting at least 50 times their self weight .
                1st  prize innovation : 600 CHF
                2nd prize innovation : 400 CHF
                3rd  prize innovation : 250 CHF
 
One prize will be given after a public vote .
                 Audience prize : 600 CHF
 
The event will take place on Wednesday the 27th of February 2013 at the EPFL, in Lausanne.
You are encouraged to register by sending an email titled ‘CARDBOARD BRIDGE’ with the name of the team members and the name of your School/University at the following adress:

If the number of registered partipicants is too large, the committee will limit the number giving priority to the first 30 registrated teams.

Hello,

I have several questions :

- By "Undulated cardboard", do you mean single layer or triple layer cardboard? Is it the same cardboard the boxes are made from?
- Are the bucket, weight, hooks and fixation material provided?
- What is the type of the fixation material? (string, cord, flat straps?)

Hi, sorry for the late reply.

you are allowed to use every type of cardboard (without extra treatment).
All the material you'll need to test your structure are provided.
I'm not sure I understand your last question, but your bridge will only lean on two plates as shown in the sketches.
Maybe you can have a look at last year's contest. Even if the rules have changed, the lean method is the same.
