iPhone customization for M-Budget, yallo and CoopMobile
For many weeks, many speculated about the iPhone official launch in Switzerland on Friday (February 29) and with Swisscom. They were unfortunately all wrong, as we still see nothing coming, and no official announcement about a future release either. Today, I do however have some free goodies for Swiss iPhone owners. If your operator is M-Budget, yallo or CoopMobile, keep on reading this post!

The 1.1.3 firmware introduced the concept of "Carrier Bundle" to store carrier-specific settings on the phone. Like the operator logo on the top left corner, services under Settings > Phone (see screenshot below, with M-Budget Mobile services) and Safari bookmarks. I created bundles for the three aforementioned operators.

To install these bundles:
- you need a jailbreaked 1.1.3 or newer firmware iPhone, with SSH installed;
- download and unzip on your hard disk the ZIP file linked below (SwissPrepaidCarrierBundles.zip);
- copy the three .bundle files over to your iPhone in "/System/Library/Carrier Bundles";
- on the iPhone, run commands:

cd /System/Library/Carrier\ Bundles
ln -s MBudget_CH.bundle 22801
ln -s yallo_CH.bundle 22802
ln -s CoopMobile_CH.bundle 22803

- swap the SIM card in your phone with one from another carrier (e.g. the AT&T card that came with your US iPhone), to force the re-creation of symlinks;
- put your SIM card back in, and restart the iPhone;
- enjoy the new features on your phone.

Pair your Apple Remote
The newer macs come with a handy infrared remote control. Out of the box, any remote control can control any mac. This can bring very funny situations in the classroom, where, while the teacher shows a presentation from his laptop, the students move the slides back and forward, and the teacher going crazy because he thinks his machine is buggy! To cope with this, simply "pair" your Apple Remote with your computer, so that only your personal Apple Remote can control your laptop. To achieve this, hold down the Forward and Menu keys for a few seconds, until your screen shows a successful pairing. If you later decide to remove the pairing, head over to the Security preference pane, and click the Unpair button (see picture). If you have Boot Camp installed on your Intel mac, the procedure to pair the remote control is the same in Windows.

LAME Encoder package Mac OS Universal
LAME is an open source MP3 encoder, especially efficient at mid-high bitrates and at VBR. Both quality and speed improvements are still happening, probably making LAME the only MP3 encoder still being actively developed. More info at lame.sourceforge.net. The .pkg file is linked below.

EPFL VPN on the iPhone
My phone provider doesn't provide any data plan, I am however able to surf the web and check my e-mails on the go with my iPhone at high speed, for free and in a lot of places in Switzerland. How? Thanks to the integrated VPN client on the iPhone and the partnership of EPFL with several hotspots providers. As explained on the page SWITCHmobile : PWLAN, all wi-fi hotspots from Monzoon, TPN, TheNet and Swisscom are accessible for free for all EPFL members. Swisscom provides for example hotspots in all major railway stations, like Lausanne CFF station. Very handy! The screenshot below shows how to configure the iPhone VPN.
